Butterfly in Japan

A compilation of scenes from OperaMachine’s production of Finding Butterfly at the 6th Bird Theatre Festival in September 2013 in Tottori, Japan. The cast were mainly the same as in London the year before with Li Li singing the role of Butterfly, Jessica Costelloe as Pinkerton’s wife and Megumi Shiozaki reprising her role as Nurse Suzuki. Xiaoran Wang sang Yamidori once more, flying from Beijing and, like Li Li, his first time in Japan. Latana Phoung sang Goro in this production, originally sharing the Suzuki role with Megumi in London. She became a grotesque Charlie Chaplin figure… Ed Hughes sang Pinkerton – very well – taking on Joe Morgan’s role in London and Attila Mokus’s Stachelhaus was sung by Michael Davis. The Chorus was made up of Tottori Opera Association members.
